Lutheran Social Services of Nevada (LSSN) began serving the Las Vegas community in 1985. For the first eleven years, the social ministry operated only a food pantry and clothing closet. Then, in December 1996, the agency earned its 501(c)(3) status and expanded services to include supportive services for senior citizens, youth, and low-income families. Seeking to be true to the Gospel's social mandate, LSSN is guided by its Mission Statement: To express the love of Christ by serving and caring for people in need.
In the last fourteen years, Lutheran Social Services of Nevada has become a leader in social service programs and programs that alleviate poverty in Southern Nevada. LSSN currently operates a supermarket-style, client-choice emergency food pantry, gifting over 200,000 pounds of food to over 15,000 unduplicated individuals each year. The agency also provides temporary financial assistance to low-income households facing an eviction due to a temporary crisis that impacted their ability to pay rent for just one or two months, as well as assists low-income households to obtain birth certificates or Nevada State IDs so they can obtain employment or receive public assistance. When a household's crisis is longer-term, or their barriers to stable housing are too high, LSSN operates three apartment buildings totaling 13 apartments for those families with minor children to live in for six to eighteen months, while they regain their stability and self-sufficiency through intensive case management and wraparound supportive services. LSSN also has several holiday programs benefiting over 800 families annually.
Lutheran Social Services is also a much sought-after partner with other community organizations to develop and implement new programs and services needed in the community. LSSN has partnered with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to provide emergency shelter placement for homeless families, and is still assisting them with reuniting chronically homeless individuals or families with friends/families "back home." Each year, LSSN partners with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Family Promise, and Sprint to encourage the chronically homeless and at-risk individuals to "Phone Home for the Holidays," re-establishing family ties that can break the cycle of homelessness. In 2009, LSSN partnered with five neighborhood-based organizations to improve access to temporary financial assistance with rent/utilities, acting as lead agency in a contract with Clark County to distribute $3 million in Stimulus Bill funding to households negatively affected by the downturn in the economy. Since its inception, the agency has assisted over 150,000 low-to-moderate income families by providing basic needs, supportive social programming, and intensive and individualized case management to people in need.
